A Curriculum Question

Dear Readers,

Have any of you heard of H.A. Guerber? In my quest for history text and reading lists, I came upon this when I found Nothing New Press and a wonderful-looking organized reading list. For my middle group it looks intriguing...written in the 19th century, it tells the story of our country with courage, patriotism and nobility. What I want to know is, does the presentation seem factual and honest (the good and the bad) as it relates the history of our nation? Does it deal fairly with areas of conflict, say, surrounding presidents or wars?

Thanks to anyone who may have some input here!

Have a blessed and safe Labor Day weekend~

I own this book. I've read this book. Hmmmmm, areas of conflict? I would have to look again. My *memory* of Guerber (we own them all from NothingNew) is that she tries to tell a balanced story. BUT, I also read TruthQuest commentary (Michelle Miller) which (in the older guides) tries to give a good perspective of the good and the bad. Also, Clarence Carson's Basic History of the US is where we've learned a lot of the 'rest of the story.' (So, with all that in my more recent memory... I may be giving an inaccurate picture of Guerber)
I like and would recommend Guerber, but *essential for me (us) => TruthQuest and Carson. I'm sure we didn't learn so much about Lincoln from Guerber as we did from Carson, for example. I could be more specific, but I'll save that for an email if you want.

I don't know if that helps you at all ;-) Did you read sample chapters? Can I look up something in particular for you?

I myself have never heard of this book..though I must admit I would probably buy it because the cover looks Great..you might consider calling the Heritage Foundation or David Barton as they are familiar with history and writings..( Maybe they could help ) I also know that the book writer "For You Signed" at the Boyer Blog..is pretty familiar with history and curriculam and they are always more than ready to help...Let me know what you find out..as the book does look good and we are always on the hunt for good history..

You can download (free) some of HA Guerber's titles from The Gutenburg Project. Then you can either read fro the computer screen, or you can copy/cut/paste into a document and print it out.

Scroll down to HA Guerber.

You can also find free downloadable books by Henty here - just scroll to his name.

I am sorry to say that we have not read this book yet, but for now my family is reading The Story of the Ancient World by Christine Miller, which was a revised version of The Story of the Chosen People by H. A. Guerber.

Some of the information which was taken from Josephus and Ussher was quite new and interesting. We compared the questionable dates and information to the Bible, the writings of Josephus and the timeline of Ussher, and it is all valid as far as we can tell.

Can you post a review of the book one you have finished reading it? (and maybe a few in between:)
It looks quite interesting.
