...Caleb discovered this little egg. Seizing the Charlotte Mason moment, I quickly reached for the bird book to figure out what we might have. Sparrow? Wren? Imagining the sketches, measurements, life cycle and habitat studies, learning the song of the birds...finally something for our notebooks!
...instead we settled for the observation that these eggs aren't really worth scrambling for breakfast...

Neat picture! It looks to me like a song sparrow's egg. We had a little nest in a small blue spruce tree here and the eggs look exactly the same. Unfortunately either a cat or another bird got into the nest and knocked out most of the eggs. I don't think the mother is sitting on the last one anymore. :(
