Although we are still not feeling well, I made a couple of "home crafted gifts" today, in the event that we still travel to my hometown to celebrate Christmas with my family. Hoping to bake some gingerbread men with the children, I stopped at the store to purchase ground cloves, and (I'm sorry if this seems like I'm complaining) but the itsy-bitsy container was $6.99! And if I wanted to get a fraction more, the glass jar was a whopping $10.99!
On principle alone, I just couldn't do it. Briefly I tried to rationalize the travel from India(?) may have contributed to the cost, then I found myself doing what every frugally-minded, domestically-responsible, self-sufficient-seeking woman would do...
...I began to wonder if I couldn't just grow these little babies myself. Honestly though, I left that aisle not even sure if it's a plant, tree or bush. Who knows??? Maybe the boys will taste just fine without cloves...

Oh you had me laughing at that one :-) Do you children always run around saying such funny things?
I could just picture you there, standing in the aisle, debating whether or not to buy them. How they might taste without cloves or what to use as a subsitute. In my case throw in a few children who are wandering and one who is trying to climb out of the cart and then my phone rings :-/ Yes I know that feeling all to well :-)

I buy whole cloves and use a mortar and pestle.It's cheaper...
I never use cloves for our gingerbread men, and they taste great still :)
And I'm sure 'the boys' WILL taste just as yummy.

I personally think cloves are overrated, and I tend to leave them out if the recipe calls for them. Or I cut way back. Perhaps they are an acquired taste?
I'd have left them at the grocers also!
I too cannot believe the price of cloves! (and also don't know if it is a tree, herb, etc.) I needed some for pumpkin pie around Thanksgiving time and sent David to the store to get some. He came home and told me the price it was and I nearly fainted! I thought he hadn't bought it, but he had. . .so needless to say I've been very sparing of cloves in my recipes lately, so as to make the little bitty container last longer!
